Cross River State’s Sports commissioner Patrick Ugbe has declared Calabar as the safest place in Nigeria.

The U.J. Usuene stadium in Calabar is the likely venue for the crucial World Cup qualifying match between the Super Eagles and their Malawian counterparts.
Malawi football officials had written to FIFA to ask for their decisive Group F World Cup qualifier against Nigeria to be moved from Calabar after their Belgian Coach Tom Saintfiet expressed his discomfort over the venue.

However the Cross River Sports Commissioner said it was unheard of for anybody to say Calabar was not safe for a football and also added that the Beautiful City seen as a tourist attraction by many remains the safest place in Nigeria.

“I think Malawi are just afraid of the fact that the they will lose in Calabar, Calabar, I am bold to say is one if not the safest place in Nigeria,” Mr Ugbe posited.

Already FIFA has written to the Nigeria Football Federation seeking assurances of the safety of Calabar for the September 7 crucial tie.
