ITTF African Junior & Cadet Championship: Nigeria finishes second behind Egypt in Algiers

With a six-man team, Nigeria finished second behind Egypt in the overall medal table at the 2016 ITTF African Junior & Cadet Championship which ended on Tuesday April 12 in Algiers, the capital of Algeria.

Egypt dominated the tournament with 22-man team after claiming the 15 gold medals at stake at the seven-day tournament which has over 12 countries taking part.

From the team, singles and doubles events, Egypt ruled over other teams with Nigeria being the only team closing the gap on the North African in all the events.

Also the host – Algeria which has over 20 players failed to finish in top three despite winning two silver and five bronze medals. They were beaten to the third spot by Tunisia which has three silver and five bronze medals with 16-man team.

Nigeria amassed four silver and four bronze medals with the six-man team while Congo Brazzaville with nine-man team claimed two bronze medals while Angola and Mauritius won one bronze medal each.

Also, Egypt and Nigeria qualified their boys and girls teams for the 2016 ITTF World Junior Championship holding in Cape Town, South Africa in November. Tunisia’s boys’ team and Algeria’s girls complete the continental quota for the global championship. South Africa as the host will be the fourth African team competing at the Cape Town tournament.

Nigeria’s Esther Oribamise also made the eight-man African team for the 2016 ITTF World Cadet Challenge holding in Shanghai, China in October.
