All set for Rowing, Canoe and Sailing exhibition at National Youth Games

All is set for the rowing and sailing exhibition event of the 2016 National Youth Games holding at the Permanent site of the University of Ilorin.

The event which will be held today (Wednesday) at the Dam inside the main campus by 4pm is expected to have 12 states in attendance.

According to the secretary of the Nigeria Rowing, Canoe and Sailing Federation, Mrs Bunmi Ola-Oluode, the federation in conjunction with the Department of Grassroots sports of the Ministry of Sports have left no stone unturned in ensuring a smooth exhibition later today.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin, Ola-Oluode confirmed that athletes from 12 states will be competing in sailing, rowing and canoeing (canoe and kayak) events.

“We have about 12 states that have registered with the host state, Kwara inclusive. We will have minimum of 3 athletes from each of the states that have registered”

She confirmed that the facilities for the events are fantastic which is in accordance with global standard.

“We were able to locate within the University environment a dam that is linked to a lake towards Offa and it’s the exact type of water that is good for the 3 sports that will be demonstrated.”

She assured that the event which will be witnessed by the Honorable Minister of Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung, the President of the federation, Rear Admiral Festus Porbeni amongst other important sports personalities promises to be a huge success with the synergy between the ministry and the federation.

“We have the federation support for the boats and other equipments that will be used. We had a truck that came in from Lagos, with other necessary equipment purchased by the federation president.”

She concluded that although there won’t be medal presentations at the end of the event, participating athletes will be given allowances, certificates of participation and outstanding athletes an opportunity to represent Nigeria at the forthcoming Africa Youth Game in Algeria come 2017.
