Federation Cup: Post-Match Fight, Fan Arrested in Lokoja

The on-going Ramadan fast observed by Muslims was spiritually prevented pocket of bloody clashes on Wednesday at the Confluence stadium in Lokoja after the Nasarawa United versus sunshine stars tie despite mild fight that was quickly contained by security agents.

The presumed challenge cup re-match for Sunshine stars and Nasarawa United saw a 1-0 victory for the Lafia boys, completing a double win after a 3-0 win last year on the same pitch – an outcome that create bad-blood for the Akure fans.

The minor fight which ensued between the home fans and the Sunshine stars crew of supporters and players saw a Lokoja supporter arrested.

It was an off-pitch drama that was temporarily avoided by stadium officials when fans and spectators were disallowed from accessing the pitch at the end of the 2013 Federation Cup Round of 16 clash between Nasarawa United and Sunshine stars who were both meeting for the second time on the same ground in two years.

SavidNews Nigeria was on ground witnessed the attack on a Lokoja fan nicknamed Ejor by Sunshine stars players which led to the damage of one of its 32-seater glasses in a retaliatory brawl.

The attack earlier started when the angry Sunshine stars fans began beating their players following the self-acclaimed shameful lose to Nasarawa United, a situation that immediately invited the intervention of the home crowd who were bought over to support their western neighbours at the expense of the northern neighbours.

The overwhelming support received by the Governor Mimiko boys failed to produce any magic result as the Gov Al-makura boys only required a 40mintues winner through Malarchy Ilo to secure a quarter-final ticket in the on-going nation-wide tournament.

SavidNews Nigeria reports that the arrested fan, Ejor was purportedly showing some cheering sign to the Sunshine stars players despite their loss, a reaction which was misinterpreted for ridiculing resulted to the players stoning him with bottled waters.

The situation escalated into a broad fight when Sunshine stars’ players suffered some injurious wounds from hit of pieces of glass after which the
angry tall-wide-chested Ejor broke one of their Akure boys’ glass.

Ejor was heavily beaten by the Akure boys before the Security agents interventions at the expense of the Lokoja fans who failed to react due to
their spiritual engagement in the on-going Ramadan fast.

However with the Sunshine Queens and Nasarawa Amazons facing each other again in the women category of the Federation Cup on Thursday evening, the situation remains doubtful as the ill-tempered home fans may witness another intricate fracas.
