As security situation worsens in Mubi town due to continued Boko Haram attacks, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) yesterday disclosed that at least 10,496 internally displaced persons (IDPs) have so far been recorded in five camps located in Yola South and Fufore.

While more people are still pouring into the state capital, according to NEMA Senior Information Officer, Sani Datti, five pregnant women were said to have been safely delivered in two of the IDP camps.

In a statement made available in Abuja, the Director General of NEMA, Muhammad Sani Sidi, said the agency, which has been managing IDP camps and distributing relief materials in Adamawa and other states in the North East affected by the insurgency would continue to establish more camps and provide all the basic needs of the displaced persons.

Sidi said the agency has delivered adequate relief materials to all the established camps in the state, while the new one would be provided with tents.

The DG had dispatched an advanced team of NEMA officials, led by the Director, Relief and Rehabilitation, Eugene Ezeh, to assess the situation and take necessary action to bring succor to the displaced people.

Receiving the NEMA team, Governor Bala Jame Ngilari of Adamawa told the agency’s team that the government had sent vehicles for the evacuation of thousands of displaced persons who were scattered in various locations around Mubi and those that ran into Cameroon, to the established camps in Yola.

He said “the tragedy has really stressed us, we require your intervention for both short and long terms.”

According to him, majority of the displaced persons live with their relatives in the host communities, as he appealed to them to come forward and register, so that they too could benefit from whatever is provided.

Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zainab Maina, on behalf of the president, condoled with those that lost loved ones and property in the attacks.

Maina said the president assigned her to assess the situation and assured them of his continuous support up to the time when they would go back to their homes.

She said the Federal Government has been doing everything possible to bring the insurgency to an end.

The camps are in Dawarei, Girei, Malkwohi, Nyako Housing Estate, NYSC camp and COCIN Church, while the relief items provided at all the camps included drugs, rice, clothes, mattresses, maize, buckets, mats, soap, towels, cooking oil and sanitary items.
