2013 CAF Confederations Cup: Mazembe, Bizertin join Sfaxien in semi-finals

cafAlthough they lost their final Group B matches Saturday, TP Mazembe of DR Congo and Tunisian side CA Bizertin have qualified for the semi-finals of the 2013 CAF Confederations Cup.

They join CS Sfaxien of Tunisia, from Group A, who qualified as at Match Day 5 a week ago.

With their 10 points, recorded as at Match Day 5 last week, TP Mazembe lost 0-2 to FUS Rabat of Morocco while CA Bizertin were beaten 1-0 by ES Setif of Algeria.

While Mazembe went through as Group B winners, Bizertin qualified as Group runner up.

Ironically, the winners on Saturday, FUS Rabat and ES Setif (who scored six points), were eliminated from the race for the title.

RUS Rabat scored eight points, the same as Bizertin, but got eliminated on account of their minus one goal difference. Bizertin scored three goals and conceded three.

Group A matches, featuring CS Sfaxien, Tunisia vs Stade Malien, Mali, and St. Georges, Ethiopia vs Étoile Sahel, Tunisia, will be played Sunday.

In the semi-finals, which will be played over two legs (4-6 October and 18-20 October), CA Bizertin will meet Group A winners CS Sfaxien while Mazembe, winners of Group B, will meet Group A runner up which will emerge after Sunday matches.

The Group winners — CS Sfaxien and Mazembe — will host the second-leg, semi-final matches.
