Kogi State Chairman of NUT, Suleiman Ndala Abdullahi, who spoke in Lokoja, said the summit will be used to address challenges facing basic education in the state.

He said: “There must be a stakeholders’ summit on basic education to x-ray the problems in the sector and come up with a solution. Now, basic education, is at a standstill in the state and if we continue like this in the next six years, the councils may not even get salary at all, not to talk of teachers.”

He said aside convening a summit, there was a need to implement the law passed by the House of Assembly on funding of basic education.

The chairman said the law stipulates that state and local governments should contribute a stated percent of money to SUBEB for the funding of education, but they do not.

He maintained that teachers in the state were not asking for extra pay, but only wanted to be at par with other public servants in the state. Meanwhile, the state government has pledged to commit N5.4 billion to the development of primary education in the state.

Governor Idris Wada stated this while receiving the report of the Interim Management Committee of the State Universal Basic Education Board.
