Deadly Cholera Outbreak In Northwest Nigeria Kills 12

At least 12 people have died in Nigeria amid a suspected cholera outbreak that’s spread across the country, authorities said Wednesday.

Dr. Bwalki Barem Dilli, director of public health in Adamawa state, said 134 others have been hospitalized.

Dilli said the outbreak was first reported last week after General Hospital in Mubi recorded a number of cases that exhibited cholera symptoms.

“Samples from 11 patients … were positive for cholera, but it’s just rapid diagnostic test. It’s not confirmatory,” Dilli said.

“People need to be washing their hands after answering the call of nature and stop defecating in an open space.”

Medical personnel from the ministry and the World Health Organization are working to stem the outbreak.

In Kenya, two people have died from possible cholera cases there, officials said.

The potential cholera cases came as officials are dealing with an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The WHO began using an experimental vaccine Monday to try and keep the virus from spreading further.

The WHO said 28 confirmed cases and another 30 possible cases have been reported there.
