Former U.S. youth international Nicole Payne is excited about her chance to compete in the green-and-white colours of Nigeria and has set her sights on making an impression with the Super Falcons.

Following the withdrawal of some defenders – Patricia George and Osinachi Ohale from the original 25-player squad for the tournament scheduled from June 7-17, 2021, coach Randy Waldrum has decided to offer a first-time call-up to the youthful right back.

Nicole, who was born to the soccer family of Oyeleke and Mojemilat Payne in Birmingham, Alabama, is eligible to represent Nigeria despite suiting up for the United States at the U20, U18, U17, U15 and U14 levels.

Having linked with the rest of the players at Marriot Marquis Hotel in Houston, the West Virginia University women’s soccer team defender is still letting all sink in.

“it’s a great opportunity and I’m very thankful and grateful to coach Randy Waldrum for giving me the opportunity to come in and train with the team,” Payne told SavidNews.

Nicole is also the younger sister of Portimonense midfielder Stephen and Sevilla striker Toni, who made her international debut with Nigeria women’s team at the Turkish Cup in February.

Following her maiden call-up, the former multiple high-school sprinting prize winner could not hide her excitements after reuniting with her elder sister in national camp.

“It’s really a great pleasure and blessing to be here. I never expected it will come so soon at all. It’s always amazing to have a sibling or someone in your family very close to you,” she continued.

“So amazing to be able to play together in a national team. Again, It’s a blessing and I’m glad that I could experience training with her [Toni Payne]. ”

Nicole, who was part of the United States U19 squad to Netherlands friendly in November 2018, expressed overwhelming feeling about her Nigerian roots and how much she cherishes its culture.

“I’ve always had the desire to play with a senior national team and I’m very proud of my Nigerian culture, the great country of my parents. It’s a blessing and great joy to play for the country,” she continued.

“I want to express my gratitude to everyone and really appreciate the culture. My favourite Nigerian foods could either be jollof rice or pounded yam and egusi soup.”

The Super Falcons will hope to continue from where they left off in Turkey against the Raggae Girlz and the 20-year-old is not only eager to gain international experience but also excel with the country, beginning on Thursday against Jamaica at BBVA Stadium.

“It’s great to be around high-level players and high-level competition. I think It’s always great to value the environment that you in and get better at it,” she revealed.

“It’s a privilege to play with a great and amazing set of players and also strive to be the best. I’m currently with West Virginia University and I play as an outside right back and forward but predominantly as a right back.

“With the position that I play, I think I can visualize the field from a lot of different areas and be smart with the ball, decision making and bring all attributes that I have to help the team.

“I like to work hard and do what I can to help my team win. Do the best that we can and put up the best performance possible. I can bring a lot to the team and also to the table.”
