Lagos rescues 62 abandoned babies in one year – Commissioner

No fewer than 62 abandoned babies, consisting of 28 male and 34 females, were rescued by the Lagos State Government in the last one year.

The State’s Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Social Development, Mr. Enitan Oshodi said this through his Permanent Secretary, Adesegun Oshinyimika in Lagos at a press briefing to reel out the activities of the ministry in the last one year.

He disclosed that the babies who were either picked up from different locations after calls from concerned citizens or brought in by good spirited individuals were being carefully looked after by the relevant homes under the supervision of the ministry.

According to him, “the state government is committed to ensuring that adequate care and protection are provided for vulnerable children such as abandoned, homeless, abused or other children whose rights and privileges as stipulated by the Child Rights Law have been trampled upon.

The child protection unit is responsible for the rescue/ referral of all abandoned babies and “lost but found” children in the state registered orphanages”.

He said further that the Ministry now has liaison officers in the six Education Districts of the state, under its school social services, aimed at bringing socio-moral sanity to public secondary schools. This innovation according to him was to identify, manage and adjust bad behaviour among students through counselling, to ultimately stem the rising wave or crime within the school population.

Similarly, Director of the State Sports Council, Dr. Kweku Tandoh disclosed that in the last one year, the council has successfully organized regular grass root competitions, participation in national championship competitions, organization and participation in the IBILE games, organization of seminars and workshops for umpires and coaches ,payment of monthly grants to athletes and several others.

He stated that the council has also provided state of the art gym equipment and other world class sporting gadgets covering a wide area of sports.

Tandoh added that proper maintenance of sports facilities within the state which included the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Campos Mini Stadium, Onikan Stadium, Rowe Park among others has encouraged the development of sports especially with the provision of twenty four hour power supply from the state Independent Power Project, sponsorship and other economic opportunities experienced in the industry.
