THE Minister of Youth and Sports, Barr. Solomon Dalung yesterday refuted the rumour making the rounds that the federal government of Nigeria has scrapped the National Sports Commission (NSC).

Dalung who spoke while addressing members of the Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC) in Abuja said the issue is not a secret and that when the report of the committee set up by the government to that effect is made public, he will also inform Nigerians about it.

“Once it is scrapped I will announce it. I will call a press conference to formally tell you about it but since it has not been done, we will not speculate about it. But I think this is emanating from the misconception of what will happen under the merged ministry of Youth and Sports.

“Of course the President has merged so many ministries but in our own case we were merged and the committee set up has made recommendations. Once the recommendations are made public we will call the press and brief them.”

There has been this argument among sports analysts over what will be the status of the NSC and its erstwhile chief accounting officer, the Director General with the merger with the Ministry of Youth which also has a Permanent Secretary.

Recall that the Steve Orasanye committee set up by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan had among others recommended the merging of ministries, agencies and departments.
