Nigeria relieved after Jamaica left out Shaw from US Summer Series squad

Joint French topflight topscorer Khadija Shaw will not be in action when Norway face Nigeria in the US Summer Series in Houston on June 10.

Shaw, who is on the brink of signing for English giants Manchester City, had been in a breathtaking form in the French D1 Arkema, scoring 23 goals to help Bordeaux secure a Champions League spot for next season.

Despite being on the initial 31 player list earlier released in April, head coach Hue Menzies had left out the red-hot 24-year-old forward of his final 23-woman team.

The Bordeaux striker’s absence came as a great relief to the African champions, who are scheduled to play the Reggae Girlz in their opening match at the BBVA Stadium, Houston on June 10 by 10:30pm Nigeria in Texas.

Jamaica and Nigeria have never met previously at the international level in the women’s game, and they will seek to beat the Africans handled by American coach Randy Waldrum on first meeting.

After their first match with the Super Falcons in over 12 months hiatus, the Jamaicans will take on world champions US at the same match venue three days later.

This summer, the Caribbeans will be hoping to intensify their preparation for the 2023 Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament following their historic debut in France 2019.
