Nigeria’s U20 team progressed to the third qualifying round of the Caf U20 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating visitors, Burundi 2-1 on Saturday, and winning 3-1 on aggregate.
Second half late strikes from Victor Oshimen and Kelechi Nwakali were all the Flying Eagles needed to see off Les Hirondelles dans la guerr in the second leg, second round at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar, Nigeria.
Surprisingly, it was a cagey encounter in Calabar as the hosts were denied any breakthrough in the first half despite their brilliant display.
In the second half, the coach Emmanuel Amuneke’s lads left it to stun their stubborn visitors at the UJ Esuene Stadium as Oshimen broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute before Nwakali makes it 2-0 10 minutes to go.
But Ndikumana Magloire’s strike late to snatch a consolation two minutes away from the blast of the whistle.
The Flying Eagles will face Sudan in the final qualifying round to seal a place at the 2017 Caf U20 Championship billed for Zambia. The first leg in Sudan is scheduled for 8–10 July 2016, and the second leg in Nigeria will hold for 22–24 July 2016.
