ABA takes grassroots basketball coaching clinic to Taraba, Gombe
The Amateur Basketball Academies (ABA) will this weekend continue its nationwide grassroots basketball development initiative with a one-day coaching clinic in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.
The ABA Board, led by its President and Deputy Comptroller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Aliyu Lucky Abubakar, is expected to arrive in Jalingo on Saturday for the training of basketball academy coaches.
The Jalingo clinic, tagged “Drive,” follows the success of the recently concluded “Team Work” coaching clinic in Makurdi, Benue State, where 11 coaches from eight academies participated in the one-day programme.
It will be the fourth edition of ABA’s nationwide coaching programme since its commencement in June in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, before moving to Minna, Niger State.
The initiative, organised by ABA in conjunction with the Taraba State Basketball Association, is aimed at strengthening grassroots basketball development, identifying emerging talents and equipping academy coaches with modern coaching skills.
The programme will also provide coaches with an opportunity to update their knowledge of the latest basketball rules, coaching techniques and tactical approaches in line with global best practices.
Speaking on the initiative, DC Aliyu Abubakar said the programme goes beyond grassroots development, as it also focuses on coaches’ education, structured training systems, athlete mentorship and long-term player development.
“ABA strongly believes that the future of Nigerian basketball begins at the grassroots level. We believe every community court can produce champions. We believe every trainer can become a transformational leader. We believe every child deserves an opportunity to dream through sports,” he said.
Following the Jalingo clinic, the ABA coaching crew comprising Daudu Adeka, Emmanuel Odah, Alex Ujoh and Oyekan Oyedeji will move to Gombe on Monday for the next phase of the nationwide coaching programme.
The initiative is expected to further strengthen the foundation for sustainable basketball development across Nigeria by improving the quality of coaching and creating more opportunities for young talents at the grassroots.
