Bayelsa Queens appoint Wemimo Matthew as head coach
Bayelsa Queens have ushered in a new era with the appointment of experienced tactician Wemimo Matthew as the club's head coach on a two-year contract ahead of the 2026/27 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership season.
Matthew takes over from Whyte Ogbonda, whose successful two-year reign came to an end after guiding the Prosperity Girls to the 2024/25 NWFL Premiership title, the final of the WAFU B CAF Women's Champions League qualifiers, and a commendable second-place finish in the 2025/26 season.
The highly-rated coach arrives from Remo Stars Ladies, where she spent the last three seasons overseeing the steady rise of the Ikenne-based side. She will also be joined in Yenagoa by members of her trusted backroom staff.
Matthew's time at Remo Stars Ladies was marked by significant progress, with her greatest achievement coming when she steered the Sky Blue Ladies to their first-ever NWFL Super Six qualification, a landmark moment in the club's history.
Before her stint in Ikenne, Matthew built an impressive coaching résumé with spells at Sunshine Queens and Edo Queens. She also boasts valuable international experience, having served as an assistant coach with both Nigeria's Super Falcons and Falconets. A CAF-certified coach, she has further strengthened her expertise through several CAF coaching development programmes.
Her appointment signals Bayelsa Queens' determination to return to the pinnacle of women's football in Nigeria. The Prosperity Girls, six-time league champions, narrowly missed out on retaining their crown after finishing runners-up in the 2025/26 campaign.
Matthew now faces the challenge of restoring Bayelsa Queens to league glory while leading the club's push for a return to continental competition in what promises to be an exciting 2026/27 season.
