Esther Nworgu wins Nigeria's first gold medal at 2026 Commonwealth Games

 

 

Esther Nworgu has secured Nigeria's first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after a dominant performance in the women's para powerlifting lightweight event.

 

Nworgu delivered an outstanding display, setting two Commonwealth Games records on her way to the title. She lifted 123kg to earn 119 points, finishing atop the podium and giving Team Nigeria its first gold medal of the Games.

 

Nigeria celebrated a one-two finish in the event, with Esther Oyema claiming the silver medal after recording a best lift of 125kg and 115.5 points.

 

England's Olivia Broome completed the podium, taking the bronze medal with a lift of 119kg and a total of 106.6 points.

 

Nworgu's historic triumph marks a significant milestone for Team Nigeria, while the double podium finish highlights the country's continued dominance in para powerlifting at the Commonwealth Games.
