NFF adheres to FIFA directive, summons full NFF Congress for crucial meeting
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has moved to engage the full spectrum of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Congress, summoning not only Chairmen of the State Football Associations but representatives of all recognised stakeholder groups to a crucial meeting scheduled for 3:00pm today.
The meeting is expected to bring together representatives of the State Football Associations, clubs, coaches, players’ unions, beach soccer, NAPHER, referees and other constituents of the NFF Congress in what could be a major step towards resolving the deepening governance crisis in Nigerian football.
The latest development is coming amid growing concerns over the fate of the NFF Congress and the suspended electoral process following the resignation of the NFF President, Secretary-General and members of the Executive Committee.
The meeting is also being viewed as an attempt by the NSC to harmonise positions among the various football stakeholders and prevent the current transition process from degenerating into a wider institutional crisis.
The development follows virtual meetings held by the State Football Associations on Wednesday and Friday last week, during which the associations reportedly maintained that the NFF Congress could not simply be dissolved, sidelined or rendered inactive by an interim administration without due recourse to the NFF Statutes and established decision-making structures.
The State FAs, which constitute a significant component of the NFF Congress, are also understood to have communicated their concerns to FIFA over aspects of the ongoing reform process.
Among the issues reportedly raised were the sweeping suspension of the electoral process and the treatment of the NFF Congress and Electoral Committee during the transition.
The concerns assume added significance following recent engagements between Nigerian officials and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, with the world football governing body urging stakeholders to respect the existing football structures and engage the NFF Congress in resolving the crisis.
Against this backdrop, today’s meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for the NSC and the various constituents of the NFF Congress to reconcile positions and establish a mutually acceptable roadmap for the administration of Nigerian football.
The composition of the meeting is particularly significant as the NFF Congress remains the federation’s highest decision-making organ under its established governance framework.
The outcome of the engagement could therefore have far-reaching implications for the proposed reforms, the future of the electoral process and the composition of any transitional arrangement that may emerge.
Stakeholders will also be watching closely to see whether the meeting produces a consensus on the way forward, particularly on the status of the NFF Congress, the Electoral Committee and the proposed restructuring of the federation.
