NPFL: Ikorodu City go top after hard fought win over Plateau United

Ikorodu City continued their impressive NPFL form on Sunday, defeating Plateau United 2–1 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena to climb to the top of the table after Matchday 13.

The Oga Boys had to dig deep for the victory, extending their unbeaten run to eight matches and securing a fourth straight home win.

After a cagey first half, the game burst into life in the second. Joseph Arumala broke the deadlock with a well-timed header from a Folarin Temitope cross before substitute Alade Balogun capitalised on defensive indecision to double the advantage for the Lagos side.

Plateau United hit back through Wisdom Ndon, who reacted quickly to flick in Tarabina Biweribo’s long throw. The goal sparked urgency in the Peace Boys, but Ikorodu City goalkeeper John Amah produced crucial saves to keep the visitors at bay. Despite late pressure, the home side held on for all three points.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Niger Tornadoes beat Katsina United 2–0 in Minna with goals from Ismail Sarki and Abdulrasheed Dabai. Elkanemi Warriors earned a 2–0 home win over Kwara United in Maiduguri, thanks to strikes from Ismail Muktar and Daddy Abdulrahman.

Bayelsa United edged Abia Warriors 2–1 in Yenagoa, with Chinedu Sunday and Chinedu Emmanuel on target. Sunday Megwo scored the consolation for the visitors. Rivers United came from behind to defeat Warri Wolves 2–1 in Port Harcourt, as Emmanuel Nnaji and Samson Obi overturned Ademola Adebambo’s opener.

In Aba, Wikki Tourists stunned Enyimba with a 1–0 away win courtesy of Abubakar Aliyu’s 33rd-minute strike, while Nasarawa United and Kun Khalifat shared the spoils in a 1–1 draw in Owerri.

On Saturday, Bendel Insurance mounted a comeback to defeat Kano Pillars 3–2 in Benin.

Rangers International will take on Barau in Monday’s fixture, while the highly anticipated clash between Shooting Stars and Remo Stars has been postponed.
