Nigeria shines at All Africa Senior Badminton Championship, advances in Singles event

Nigerian badminton players put up an impressive performance in the All Africa Senior Badminton Championship on February 14, securing victories across multiple individual events in the men’s and women’s singles categories.

The day began with J. Emmanuel setting the pace in the Men’s Singles Round of 64, defeating H. Steyn of South Africa in straight sets. In the Women’s Singles Round of 64, Ibere Ruth had to dig deep to secure a 2-1 victory over Algeria’s Halla Bouksani, advancing to the next round.

Nigeria continued its dominance in the Men’s Singles Round of 32, with A. Opeyori comfortably dispatched M. Ouchefoun of Algeria in two straight sets. V. Ikechukwu followed suit, overcoming A. Assing of Reunion, while J. Emmanuel extended his winning streak with a convincing victory over P. Nolem of Cameroon.

In the women’s singles matches, D. Adesokan delivered a commanding performance against M. Ouchefoun of Algeria, winning in straight sets. Similarly, C. Ibere proved too strong for M. Ohlson of South Africa, securing another 2-0 victory for Nigeria.

However, Nigeria’s run in the Mixed Doubles Round of 32 came to an early end as M. Nusa and Z. Alabi fell to South Africa’s C. Kakora and J. Scholtz in a 2-0 loss.

With these results, Nigeria remains a strong force in the singles category and will be looking to continue its quest for medals in the competition.
