Nigeria strike gold again as mixed 4×400 team triumph in Ghana

Nigeria’s mixed 4x400m relay team delivered a brilliant performance to win gold at the ongoing 2026 African Athletics Championships in Ghana.

The quartet of Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson and Patience Okon-George combined superbly to power Team Nigeria to victory in a winning time of 3:16.41, handing the country its second gold medal of the championships.

Veteran sprinter Patience Okon-George anchored the Nigerian team to victory, adding another major achievement to her impressive career. She was also part of the squad that secured qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in the mixed 4x400m during the 2026 Debswana World Athletics Relays earlier this year.

The latest success further boosts Nigeria’s growing medal haul in Accra, following Tobi Amusan’s dominant gold-medal performance in the women’s 100m hurdles.

Team Nigeria have also picked up silver medals in the women’s hammer throw and women’s discus, alongside bronze finishes in the men’s 100m and women’s discus events.

With the relay triumph included, Nigeria’s medal tally after Day Two now stands at eight medals, two gold, three silver, and three bronze.

Competition continues on Thursday, May 14, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, with more medal opportunities on the horizon. The schedule includes heptathlon events in the morning before an action-packed evening session featuring finals in the men’s and women’s 400m, 800m, 400m hurdles, 3000m steeplechase, long jump and high jump.

The day will conclude with the heats of the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays as athletes continue their chase for continental glory.
