Nigeria thrash Ghana to open IHF Women's Nations Trophy Africa Zone III campaign
Nigeria’s Senior Women’s Handball team made a flying start to the inaugural IHF Women’s Nations Trophy Africa Zone III competition with a commanding 39-18 victory over Ghana on Thursday evening in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
Coached by Michael Taangahar, the Nigerian side asserted its dominance from the opening whistle, controlling the tempo and creating a wide gap against their West African rivals.
Nigeria took a comfortable 18-7 lead into the halftime break at the Palais Des Sports De Ouaga 2000, leaving Ghana with a difficult task in the second half.
The Nigerians showed no signs of slowing down after the restart, maintaining their attacking intensity and defensive discipline to extend their advantage and eventually seal a comprehensive 21-goal victory.
Queen Modebe was outstanding for Nigeria and was rewarded for her impressive display by being named the Most Valuable Player of the match.
With the opening victory secured, Nigeria will now shift focus to their second Group Stage fixture against hosts Burkina Faso on Friday.
The highly anticipated encounter is scheduled to begin at 7:00pm, as the Nigerian team looks to maintain its winning momentum in the competition.
