Osinachi Ohale: Nigeria defender returns to Italy, joins Como 1907

Former Super Falcons defender Osinachi Ohale has returned to Italy after completing a move to Como 1907 Women following her spell with Mexican side Pachuca.

Como announced the signing of the experienced Nigerian defender, who joins the BiancoBlu after an illustrious career that has taken her across several countries and major leagues.

Born in 1991, Ohale began her professional career in Nigeria in 2008 before embarking on an international club journey that included spells in the United States, Sweden, Spain, Italy and Mexico.

Her previous experience in Italy came with AS Roma in 2020, making her latest move to Como a return to a country where she has already played at the highest level.

Ohale brings considerable international experience to the Como squad, having represented Nigeria for more than 15 years and accumulated 86 senior international appearances. She was also part of the Super Falcons teams that won five Women’s Africa Cup of Nations titles.

The veteran centre-back featured for Nigeria at seven WAFCON tournaments and four FIFA Women’s World Cup editions during a distinguished international career that spanned 16 years.

Her experience is expected to provide an important boost to Como’s defensive options, particularly as the club looks to establish itself in the Italian women’s top flight.

Como 1907 Women Technical Director Nils Nielsen praised the qualities Ohale will bring to the team, highlighting her positioning, one-on-one defending and aerial ability.

“Osinachi is a very experienced and good defender. Representing Nigeria for more than 15 years, many as captain, her international experience is extremely valuable for us,” Nielsen said.

He added that her ability to “place herself in the right spot defensively” as well as her marking and aerial strengths would be valuable to the team.

For Ohale, the move represents an opportunity to begin another chapter of her club career in Italy.

“I’m happy to return to Italy and embark on this new experience here in Como; I have a very positive feeling about it,” Ohale said.

“I’m ready to do whatever the coach asks of me to help the team.”

Ohale’s move to Como comes shortly after she announced her retirement from international football following a 16-year career with the Super Falcons. In her farewell message, she described the decision as difficult after 86 appearances for Nigeria.

Her club career, however, continues to provide the experienced defender with another opportunity to compete at a high level in European football.

The Nigerian will now look to use her wealth of experience to strengthen Como’s defence and contribute to the club’s ambitions in Italy.

The Como acquisition of a five-time WAFCON winner and former Roma defender adds proven international pedigree to the squad, while Ohale gets the chance to make her mark once again in Italian football.
