Pregnant woman, two children among eight killed in Pennsylvania home shooting

By Dayo Awoniyi

Nine people, including two children and the suspected gunman, have died following a mass shooting at a residence in Erie, Pennsylvania, in the United States, leaving the community in shock as investigators work to establish the motive.

The shooting occurred on Friday, October 9, at a home on Perry Street. Authorities said the 45-year-old suspect killed eight people before apparently taking his own life. The victims included a pregnant woman, two children and other relatives of the suspected shooter.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah described the incident as one of the most difficult and heartbreaking scenes he had encountered during his law-enforcement career.

Police responded shortly before 5 p.m. after receiving an alert about gunfire. Officers arriving at the scene found two women dead outside the residence, while additional victims were discovered inside the property.

According to investigators, the suspected gunman was related to seven of the victims, while the eighth victim was a friend of the pregnant woman. The victims’ ages reportedly ranged from one year to 51 years.

Lorah said video and audio evidence was being examined as part of the investigation. Investigators were also working to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the killings.

The police chief said the suspect died from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities have not established a motive for the attack, and investigators are continuing to gather evidence and speak with relatives.

In a statement expressing sympathy for the victims and their families, Lorah said: “Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this tragedy.”

He added that the circumstances surrounding the shooting were deeply disturbing and that it would take time for investigators to establish the full picture.

The city government confirmed that the incident had been contained and said there was no continuing threat to the public. Officials also urged residents to await verified updates as the investigation continued.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed condolences to the victims’ loved ones and offered his administration’s support to Erie Mayor Daria Devlin and the affected community.

The mayor also addressed the families, acknowledging the devastating impact of the killings and assuring them that the community would support them through the aftermath.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid spreading rumours or unverified claims while investigators work to determine what happened and why.

The investigation remains ongoing, with police expected to release further confirmed information as it becomes available.
