Rosemary Nwankwo earns late Commonwealth Games camp call-up
Nigeria's rising sprint star Rosemary Nwankwo has received a late invitation to the country's Commonwealth Games training camp in Abuja following changes to the athletics squad.
The call-up was confirmed on Wednesday by her school, Nigerian Tulip International College, and her club, N-Youth Sports Academy.
Nwankwo was not part of the initial 29-athlete squad announced by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), but her inclusion comes after the withdrawals of US-based sprinter Tima Godbless and Ella Onojuvwevwo.
The teenage sprinter, however, may not report to camp immediately as she is scheduled to represent Nigeria at the CAA African U-18 and U-20 Championships in Dakar, Senegal, from July 4 to 5.
Nwankwo has enjoyed a remarkable season despite balancing athletics with her education. She featured in all three legs of the MTN Champs before playing a key role in Nigeria's qualification for the World Athletics Championships in the women's 4x100m relay at the World Relays in Gaborone, Botswana.
She also competed at the African Championships and later fought for a place in the Commonwealth Games team during the National Trials held in June.
Once she links up with the team, Nwankwo will train alongside fellow sprinters Blessing Ogundiran, Rosemary Chukwuma, Miracle Ezechukwu, Olayinka Olajide and Obi Chukwuka as preparations continue for the Games.
The N-Youth Sports Academy athlete has recorded personal season's bests of 11.42 seconds in the 100 metres and 23.19 seconds in the 200 metres this year, underlining her status as one of Nigeria's brightest young sprint prospects.
