Solid Ola Aina, Taiwo Awoniyi spark late magic as Nottingham Forest demolish Sunderland in survival push

Nigeria internationals Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi played key roles as Nottingham Forest stormed to a resounding 5-0 victory over Sunderland in Friday night’s Premier League clash at the Stadium of Light.

Aina was ever present throughout the encounter, delivering a disciplined and assured performance at right-back to help Forest secure an emphatic clean sheet. Awoniyi, introduced from the bench, wasted no time in making his mark, providing a clever assist for the fifth goal.

The striker displayed impressive composure in the box, opting to square the ball rather than take on a shot, setting up Elliot Anderson for a simple finish that capped off a dominant outing.

Forest had earlier taken control in dramatic fashion, with Trai Hume unfortunately turning the ball into his own net to hand the visitors an early lead. Chris Wood doubled the advantage soon after, before Morgan Gibbs-White added a third. Igor Jesus then made it four before halftime, as Forest struck four times in a devastating 20-minute spell.

The emphatic win extends Forest’s unbeaten run and significantly boosts their fight for Premier League survival.

They now sit on 39 points from 34 matches, eight points clear of the relegation zone and ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, who currently occupy the final drop spot.

Elsewhere, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley have already been relegated, confirming the tightening battle at the bottom of the table.
