Super Eagles step up preparations in Warsaw as Poland, Portugal friendlies loom
Nigeria’s preparations for this month’s high-profile international friendlies gathered pace on Sunday as the Super Eagles held their first training session in Warsaw, with 16 players taking part.
The three-time African champions are set to face Poland on June 3 before rounding off the international window against World Cup-bound Portugal on June 10, in two fixtures expected to provide a stern test for the squad.
Fresh from lifting the Unity Cup after a convincing 3-0 victory over Jamaica in the final, the Super Eagles arrived in Poland in confident mood and eager to extend their impressive run against quality European opposition.
The first challenge comes against Poland, a side that, like Nigeria, will not feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico after falling short in qualification.
According to Super Eagles Media Officer Promise Efoghe, camp has now fully opened in Warsaw, with all 19 invited players arriving ahead of the team’s build-up to the two encounters.
Among those already in camp are goalkeepers Maduka Okoye, Francis Uzoho, and Arthur Okonkwo, while captain Wilfred Ndidi is also present alongside experienced winger Moses Simon.
The squad also includes Akor Adams, Terem Moffi, Tochukwu Nnadi, Emmanuel Fernandez, Semi Ajayi, Rafiu Durosinmi, Paul Onuachu, Zaidu Sanusi, Igho Ogbu, Raphael Onyedika, Frank Onyeka, Bruno Onyemaechi, Abdullahi Ibrahim, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
The upcoming friendlies offer another valuable opportunity for the coaching crew to evaluate players and strengthen the team ahead of future competitions, following the disappointment of missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nigeria’s failure to qualify remains a painful setback, particularly in a tournament that will feature a record 10 African nations following the expansion to 48 teams. The Super Eagles were unable to secure a place through either the qualification campaign or the playoff route, marking a second consecutive World Cup absence after also missing the 2022 finals in Qatar.
With World Cup ambitions temporarily on hold, attention has now shifted towards rebuilding a competitive squad, improving cohesion, and maintaining the momentum generated by their recent Unity Cup success.
The upcoming clashes against Poland and Portugal will provide a clearer indication of the team’s progress as the Super Eagles continue their journey towards future continental and global assignments.
