Rising Queens’ striker, Angela ‘Boko’ Kich scored a fantastic spot kick in the 70th minute to gift her side a convincing victory over arch rivals, Mena Queens in the grand finals of the Sierra Leone National Women’s Championship last Sunday at the Wusum Stadium in Makeni City.
The penalty was awarded after Fatmata Sesay failed to clear a volley about 25 yards from goal and Sarahdinho cleverly collected the ball and dribbled into the penalty area. Salamatu ‘Fabregas’ Kamara tackled her but was adjudged to have fouled Sarah in the penalty area.
Boko, who is the tournament’s highest goal scorer with 15 goals, sent the goalkeeper the wrong way when she confidently took the penalty kick.
Despite dominating possession throughout the 90 minutes of play, the star-studded Mena Queens could not gain the advantage.
Fatmata ‘Drogba’ Turay came close to getting the opener in the 15th minute but her well-aimed volley was flicked over the cross bar by the Raising Star goalie, Isatu ‘Van Der Sa’ Dumbuya.
She made another brilliant save ten minutes later from Hannah ‘Marta’ Conteh’s header as her team held on to the lead till the final whistle.
This is the first National Women’s Championship in the country and according to the Female Football Coordinator,
Miriam Heroe, the competition is going to be an annual event.
The National Women’s Championship started with a qualifier in three of the four regions with the Western Area Football Association refused to play despite receiving monies from the FA for that purpose.
The regions returned 10 qualifiers while the FA invited two other female teams to make up the numbers.
The competition was hosted in Kono and Makeni cities respectively.
