‘SURE-P Funds are tools of transformation in Kogi’ – Gov Idris Wada admits

Gov Idris Wada of Kogi has described funds received under the subsidy Reinvestment and empowerment programme (SURE-P) as the propelling force of the transformation agenda recorded in the State.

Wada, stated this when he received in his office Gen. Martins Luther Agwai (rtd),the National Chairman and members of the SURE-P Board in his office in Lokoja on Monday.

The National Chairman of SURE-P and members were in the State for National stakeholder’s conference, with the theme:
SURE-P; issues, challenges and prospects.

Wada,who was represented by his Deputy,Mr Yomi Awoniyi, desclosed that the state has had to rely on SURE-P funds to intervene in critical sectors of the state economy following the drastic decline witnessed in the revenue accruing the State from the Federation Account.

Wada,noted that the State had been able to make impact in the lives of its citizens using the SURE-P Funds,said the allocation the state receives on monthly basis can barely pay state worker’s salary monthly.

He stated that Local Government Councils in the State have also been able to meet the provision of basic infrastructures to their citizens, by adequately deploying funds accruing to them from SURE-P.

Wada,said that the State Government had channeled SURE-P funds to the area of basic health care to citizens and providing physical infrastructures and fighting polio and other communicable diseases.

” Over 8,500 youths have been engaged under the State Youth Advancement and Development Programme in the state,all thanks to SURE-P,”He said.

He thanked the Federal Government for given consideration to the completion of the Lokoja – Abuja dualization road project using SURE-P funds.

Earlier in his remarks, Gen. Martins Luther Agwai (rtd) Chairman of the National SURE-P Board, said under the SURE-P programme, the Federal Government had selected a road each for completion in each geo-political zone, added that the funds had been channeled in provision of critical infrastructure like roads and bridges all over Nigeria.

Agwai,noted that through the SURE-P intervention, the Federal Government had succeeded in getting Railway train to run from Lagos to Kano, while that of Porthercourt, Enugu to Maiduguri has reached an advanced stage.

He stated that over 600 Primary Healthcare Centres, provision of boreholes as well as engaging about 120,000 women and youths to work in the area of community service and providing social security, have been embarked by the National SURE-P.

Agwai disclosed that the board’s meeting in Lokoja was geared towards gathering feedback from people on what strategy to be employed in the utilization of the SURE-P funds in 2015. (NAN)
