2024 National Sports Festival: Team Ogun clinch gold over Sokoto in women's handball

 

 

The host state, Ogun, concluded an exhilarating handball tournament with a hard-fought 38–34 victory against Sokoto in the women's final on Wednesday, igniting wild celebrations among the crowd at the Alake Sports Hall in Ijeja, Abeokuta.

 

In a thrilling match, Ogun narrowly led the first half 18–17, but it was in the closing moments of the second half that they truly asserted their dominance, pulling away from a determined Sokoto team to secure the win and claim the gold medal.

 

With the backing of their home supporters, Ogun exhibited resilience, speed, and strategic discipline, showcasing impressive performances throughout the court. Sokoto, for their part, fought bravely and kept pace with their rivals goal for goal for significant portions of the match, but ultimately had to accept the silver medal.

 

Edo secured third place after defeating Kogi 32-20 in the third place match held on Tuesday.

 

In other news, the Men's final between Lagos and Ogun State was interrupted due to heavy rain and is scheduled to resume on Thursday at 9 am.
