2025 All-Africa Senior Badminton Championship: Anu Opeyori sees off Egypt's Elgamal to claim seventh African title
Nigeria’s badminton star Anuoluwapo Juwon Opeyori has secured his seventh African title after a 2-0 (21-7, 23-21) victory over Egypt’s Adham Hatem Elgamal in the men's singles final of the All-Africa Senior Badminton Championship in Douala, Cameroon on Sunday.
Opeyori displayed his dominance throughout the tournament, beginning with a solid win over Zambia’s Kalombo Mulenga in the opening round on February 10.
He then advanced past Mauritius' Georges Paul in the quarterfinals before defeating Morocco’s Driss Bourroum 2-0 in the semifinals.
His final match against Elgamal saw the Nigerian star replicating his experience, composure, and technical brilliance, as he took the first set convincingly at 21-7 before edging a tense second set 23-21 to seal the gold medal.
The victory extends Opeyori’s reign as Africa’s best, adding another gold medal to his collection after first winning the continental title in 2019.
The two-time Olympian went on to claim consecutive championships from 2022 to 2025, further solidifying his status as the most successful Nigerian badminton player of his generation.
The victory cements Opeyori’s status as Africa’s best, making him a five-time consecutive champion of the All-Africa Senior Badminton Championships (2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025).
He has also won two All-Africa Games gold medals (2019 and 2023/2024), bringing his total continental singles titles to seven.
