Aduku backs Falconets to make strong start at FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup
Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team head coach, Moses Aduku, is confident the Falconets have what it takes to make a strong impression at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
The Nigerian youngsters begin their campaign on Monday, September 7, against Spain at the Arena Sosnowiec Stadium, with Aduku insisting his players are prepared for the challenge that awaits them.
The Falconets rounded off their pre-tournament preparations with a goalless draw against South Korea, a result Aduku believes provided his team with a valuable test ahead of the mundial.
While acknowledging the quality of the Korean side, the experienced tactician felt Nigeria could have walked away with victory had they been more clinical in front of goal.
“For me, the game was so good. We lost one or two scoring chances to win the game, but all the same, I respect the Korean team. They are also a good side,” Aduku said.
With the friendly matches now behind them, the coach says the Falconets have turned their full attention to their opening Group F encounter against Spain.
“Yes, we are ready. That’s why we are in Poland. We are here to take one game at a time, and we have no other game but to play against Spain. So, we are ready.”
Aduku also provided a positive update on the team’s fitness, confirming that there are no injury concerns ahead of the highly anticipated opener.
“So far, so good. We are done with our friendly games, and for me, we are good. There are no injury worries, and my girls are ready. Therefore, we’re waiting for the 7th against Spain.”
The clash will carry an extra layer of significance for the Falconets, who will be looking to avenge their previous World Cup defeat to Spain.
The two nations last met at the quarter-final stage of the 2018 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in France, where Spain edged Nigeria 2-1 at the Guy-Piriou Stadium in Brittany.
Seven years on, Aduku and his players will hope the next chapter tells a different story as Nigeria begin their latest quest for global glory.
