Nigeria's handball queens begin Nations Trophy quest against Ghana
Nigeria’s senior women’s handball team will begin their campaign at the inaugural IHF Women’s Nations Trophy Africa Zone III on Thursday, September 3, as they face Ghana in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The team, under the guidance of head coach Michael Taangahar, will battle the Ghanaians in their opening Group Stage fixture at 6:00pm GMT, before returning to action against hosts Burkina Faso on Friday, September 4, at the same time.
The IHF Women’s Nations Trophy Africa Zone III is scheduled to run from September 2 to 6 in Ouagadougou, with Nigeria aiming to make a strong impression in the maiden edition of the competition and secure a positive result against their West African opponents.
Taangahar’s charges have enjoyed an extensive period of preparation, spending several weeks in camp at the Indoor Sports Hall, Package B of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The coach used the training camp to sharpen the team’s tactical approach and build cohesion ahead of the continental challenge.
As part of their preparations, the Nigerian side travelled to Cotonou, Benin Republic, where they played a warm-up match against a selected team comprising players from leading Beninese clubs Aspac and Flowers Handball Clubs. Nigeria emerged 34-31 winners in the keenly contested encounter.
With their preparations completed, the Nigerian handball queens will now turn their attention to the Nations Trophy, with Taangahar and his players targeting a winning start against Ghana before facing hosts Burkina Faso in what promises to be another demanding encounter.
