African Elite Championship: Nigeria target continental glory as boxers head to Nairobi

Team Nigeria is set to test its strength against the continent’s best boxers as the country prepares to compete at the inaugural African Boxing Elite Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, from October 15 to 28, 2026.

The Nigerian contingent will feature 10 boxers across 10 weight categories, comprising five male and five female athletes, as the nation seeks to make a strong statement at the maiden edition of the continental competition.

The team’s participation underscores Nigeria’s ambition to strengthen its position in African boxing and showcase its growing pool of elite talents.

A total of 19 delegates will represent the country at the championship, with the contingent scheduled to depart Nigeria on Tuesday, October 13, and arrive in Nairobi on October 14. The early arrival will give the athletes and officials time to prepare for the competition ahead of its opening.

The championship presents an important opportunity for Nigeria’s boxers to measure their abilities against top opponents from across Africa, gain valuable international experience and demonstrate their technical quality on a continental stage.

A strong performance could also boost the confidence of the athletes and further enhance Nigeria’s reputation in the sport.

The National Sports Commission has wished the contingent success, urging the athletes to display discipline, determination and competitiveness throughout the tournament.

With Nigeria fielding athletes in both the male and female categories, expectations will be high as the team heads to Kenya to fly the nation’s flag at the historic championship.
