Akor Adams' last gasp strike sparks Sevilla survival charge against Espanyol
Jerome Akor Adams emerged as Sevilla’s unlikely saviour on Saturday night after netting a dramatic stoppage-time winner to seal a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over RCD Espanyol in a tense La Liga relegation battle.
The Nigerian striker, introduced in the 75th minute, produced the decisive moment deep into added time at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium, sending the home fans into wild celebrations as Sevilla snatched three crucial points in their fight for survival.
Sevilla had looked headed for another damaging result after falling behind early in the second half, but the hosts showed resilience when academy defender Castrín levelled the contest late on before Akor completed the dramatic turnaround with a calm finish under pressure.
According to Sofascore, Akor earned an impressive 7.8 rating for his game changing cameo, while fellow Nigerian international Chidera Ejuke, who featured for the entire match, received a solid 7.3 rating.
The stoppage time strike was Akor’s ninth La Liga goal of the season and could prove vital in Sevilla’s desperate bid to avoid relegation from Spain’s top flight.
The victory moved Sevilla further clear of the relegation zone and provided fresh hope in one of the fiercest survival battles in recent La Liga history. Spanish reports described the result as a major morale boost for the Andalusian giants, who have endured a difficult and pressure filled campaign.
With only a handful of matches left in the season, the relegation fight remains wide open, with several clubs separated by just a few points near the bottom of the table. Sevilla’s recent improvement has revived belief that the seven-time Europa League champions can preserve their top-flight status.
For Espanyol, however, the defeat deepened their worries after extending their winless streak in 2026, leaving the club facing mounting pressure heading into the decisive final weeks of the season.
