CAF to introduce VAR from group stage of Champions League, Confederations Cup

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology from the group stage of both the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup beginning this season.

CAF Acting General Secretary Samson Adamu confirmed the development to sports journalist Micky Jnr, marking a significant step towards improving officiating standards in African club football.

The planned introduction means VAR will be available from the group stage of both competitions, rather than being restricted to later rounds.

The move is expected to strengthen decision-making on key match incidents, including goals, penalty decisions, direct red cards and cases of mistaken identity.

The development represents a major milestone for African club football as CAF continues efforts to enhance the quality and credibility of its competitions.
