Nigeria defender Oluwatosin Demehin made her official debut for Portuguese champions Benfica as they secured a 2-0 victory away to Rio Ave in the second round of the 2026/27 Liga BPI season.

The Nigerian international started the match on the bench before being introduced in the 72nd minute, replacing Diana Gomes as Benfica sought to protect their advantage and secure a second consecutive league victory. 

Demehin immediately settled into Benfica’s defensive structure as the visitors maintained control of the contest during the closing stages.

The defender also came close to marking her debut with a goal in the 86th minute when she arrived at the far post following a corner, but her effort failed to find the target. 

Benfica had already established a 2-0 advantage before Demehin’s introduction, with Canadian forward Chandra Davidson scoring both goals.

Davidson opened the scoring in the 17th minute after being set up by Catarina Amado, finishing confidently to give the visitors the lead.

The Canadian forward completed her brace nine minutes into the second half, heading home Marit Lund’s precise cross to double Benfica’s advantage.

Demehin’s arrival came shortly after Benfica had strengthened their grip on the encounter, with the Nigerian defender helping the reigning Portuguese champions see out the remainder of the match without conceding. 

The appearance represented an important milestone for Demehin following her summer move to Benfica and provided her with her first taste of competitive football for the six-time Portuguese champions.

She had previously been named among Benfica’s substitutes for their opening Liga BPI fixture against Racing Power, which the champions won 3-0. 

Benfica have now opened their league campaign with two victories from two matches, scoring five goals without conceding.

The Portuguese champions will quickly turn their attention to the UEFA Women’s Champions League, where they are scheduled to face Juventus in their opening league-phase fixture on Tuesday, September 22. 

Demehin’s debut adds another important chapter to the growing presence of Super Falcons players in Europe’s elite club competitions, with the defender now beginning her Benfica journey at both domestic and continental level.
