Golden Eaglets held to 1-1 draw by Derby Academy in Abuja

The Nigerian U-17 boys (Golden Eaglets) of Nigeria were held to a 1-1 draw by Derby Academy in an entertaining friendly encounter at the Sunrise Football Pitch in Abuja on Friday.

Playing on their home ground, Derby Academy made the brighter start, controlling the tempo and creating pressure as they searched for an early breakthrough. The Golden Eaglets, however, stood firm defensively to keep the hosts at bay.

The five-time world champions gradually grew into the game, taking control of the midfield through fluid passing and quick transitions. Their improved display unsettled the Derby Academy defence, but neither side could find the breakthrough before the interval.

The tempo remained high after the restart, with both teams producing attacking moves in search of the opening goal. Derby Academy eventually broke the deadlock on the hour mark after one of their attackers was brought down inside the penalty area.

The referee pointed to the spot, and the resulting penalty was calmly converted to put the home side ahead.

The goal prompted an immediate response from the Golden Eaglets, who intensified their pressure in search of an equaliser. Their persistence was rewarded seven minutes later when they restored parity.

Both sides continued to push for a winning goal, but neither could find a decisive finish as the entertaining contest ended 1-1.

The friendly forms part of the Golden Eaglets’ preparations for the WAFU B U17 Championship, scheduled to begin in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on Saturday, October 10.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group B alongside Côte d’Ivoire and Niger Republic, with the Golden Eaglets set to play their opening match on October 14.
