Federation Cup shockers: Kwara United, Shooting Stars crash out
The Round of 32 of the Federation Cup produced thrilling encounters, dramatic penalty shootouts and major upsets as several top sides bowed out of the competition.
Among the biggest surprises was Sokoto United’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kwara United, while Bendel Insurance advanced in style with a commanding 3-1 win over Crown FC. El-Kanemi Warriors and Kada Warriors also booked their places in the next round after nerve-racking penalty shootouts. El-Kanemi edged Akwa United 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw, while Kada Warriors stunned Shooting Stars 5-4 in the shootout after both sides finished regulation time level at 1-1.
Wikki Tourists secured a convincing 3-1 win against Bayelsa United, Bida Lions defeated Warri Wolves 2-0, and Flight FC progressed after overcoming Mighty Jets FC 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
Rivers United emerged victorious in one of the most entertaining matches of the round, edging Rangers International 3-2 in a five goal thriller. Nasarawa United advanced via a walkover against Ejigbo City, while Plateau United claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Kogi United.
FC Basira won the longest penalty shootout of the round, defeating Ingas FC 8-7 after a 1-1 draw. Ikorodu City continued their impressive campaign with a 2-0 win over Jigawa Golden Stars, while Enyimba secured a slim 1-0 victory over Gombe United. Sunshine Stars U-19 maintained their giant-killing run with a 2-1 triumph over Warinje FC, and Barau FC completed the Round of 16 lineup with a 1-0 win against Abakaliki FC.
