Guinea-Bissau head coach Emiliano Té has urged caution after his side’s impressive 3-0 victory over Nigeria, insisting that the Djurtus must continue working before they can begin talking about qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Guinea-Bissau produced a commanding performance against the Super Eagles at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau on Tuesday, recording their second consecutive victory in Group L.

Franculino Djú opened the scoring before Mama Baldé doubled the hosts’ advantage, while Álvaro Djaló completed the emphatic victory in stoppage time.  

The result moved Guinea-Bissau onto six points from two matches, having previously defeated Tanzania 2-0 in their opening qualifier.

Nigeria, meanwhile, had started their campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in Uyo before suffering their first defeat of the qualifying series against Té’s side.  

Despite the convincing nature of the victory, 
Té refused to suggest that Guinea-Bissau had already done enough to secure a place at the continental championship.

According to Té, the performance against Nigeria showed that the national team is progressing, but he believes further improvement will be required in the remaining matches.  

He also urged his players to maintain their tactical discipline and continue searching for ways to improve regardless of the opposition.

“It’s a journey to reach the African Cup of Nations. The victory against Nigeria demonstrates that the national team is doing well and will continue to evolve in the upcoming matches," he said as quoted by Odemocratagb.

“Every game has its own story. You need to play tactical football, create better scoring opportunities, and always believe that you can do more and better, regardless of the opponent," he added.

The Guinea-Bissau coach’s comments underline the competitive nature of Group L, where the Djurtus have made an encouraging start but still have a long qualification campaign ahead.

Tanzania, one of the co-hosts of the 2027 AFCON, already have their place at the tournament guaranteed, leaving Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar competing for the remaining qualifying position in the group.  

For Guinea-Bissau, the victory over Nigeria represents a significant boost after the opening win against Tanzania, but Té is clearly keen to keep his squad focused on the challenges ahead rather than allow the early results to create complacency.

The Djurtus will now look to build on their perfect start as the race for the remaining Group L qualification place continues.
