HFN unveils 2026 calendar with event hosts
The Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) has rolled out an ambitious lineup of competitions for 2026, with Abuja, Makurdi, and Lafia selected to host some of the country’s biggest handball events.
At the centre of the federation’s plans is the 2026 Handball Premier League, which will take place in Abuja this August, alongside the introduction of a thrilling 4×4 Handball Championship scheduled for June 16 to 19 in Makurdi, Benue State.
The federation also confirmed that the North-Central Handball Championship will be staged in Lafia, Nasarawa State, from July 12 to 18, as part of efforts to strengthen domestic competitions and expand the sport’s popularity nationwide.
HFN President Jibril Saidu Ojih said the competitions are designed to usher in a new era for Nigerian handball by creating more excitement around the game and attracting wider support.
“The Handball Premier League and the 4×4 Handball Championship are part of our broader vision to reposition handball in Nigeria and make the sport more attractive to players, fans, sponsors, and partners,” Ojih said.
He noted that the newly introduced 4×4 Championship will offer a fresh experience for both players and supporters, adding a new layer of entertainment and competitiveness to the sport.
“We are excited about what these events will bring to Nigerian handball. Abuja will witness a top-class Premier League, while Makurdi will host a unique 4×4 championship that promises excitement and entertainment for everyone involved,” he added.
Ojih further called on stakeholders, sports lovers, and corporate partners to support the federation’s drive to elevate handball’s status in the country.
“With the support of stakeholders and the passion of our athletes, we are confident that 2026 will be a remarkable year for handball in Nigeria,” he stated.
The competitions are expected to attract clubs, players, officials and fans from different parts of the country as the federation intensifies efforts to grow the game beyond its traditional hubs and create a stronger national presence for handball.
