Seun Ogunsakin shines on Roland Garros, debut, defeats French favourite

Nigeria’s teenage tennis sensation, Seun Ogunsakin, announced himself on the Roland Garros stage in style on Thursday, defeating France’s Lenny Couturier in straight sets to keep his hopes alive of reaching the boys’ singles main draw.

Making his debut appearance at the prestigious clay-court tournament, the 17-year-old Nigerian produced an assured performance to overcome the home favourite 6-2, 6-4 in a contest that lasted about one hour and 30 minutes.

Ogunsakin showed confidence from the opening exchanges, dictating play from the baseline and applying consistent pressure with his aggressive shot-making. His intensity paid off early as he comfortably claimed the first set 6-2, silencing the French crowd with a composed display.

The second set, however, proved far more demanding.

Backed by strong home support, Couturier attempted to claw his way back into the encounter, forcing longer rallies and testing the Nigerian’s resolve. But Ogunsakin remained calm under pressure, matching his opponent point for point while producing several crucial winners at key moments.

As the tension rose in the closing stages, the Ekiti-born youngster held firm during decisive service games before sealing the set 6-4 to complete an impressive straight-sets victory.

The win sends Ogunsakin into the final qualifying round, where he will discover his next opponent on Friday as he continues his push for a spot in the junior main draw at Roland Garros.

The result represents another major milestone in the teenager’s growing journey on the international junior circuit, further underlining his reputation as one of Africa’s brightest emerging tennis talents.

Ogunsakin has enjoyed an impressive rise this season, highlighted by his triumph at the ITF J200 Africa Regional Championship in Cairo, Egypt, where he defeated Botswana’s Ntungamili Raguin in the final to claim one of the biggest titles of his career so far.

Prior to arriving in France, he also caught attention at the J300 Charleroi tournament in Belgium, where he stunned third seed Kanta Watanabe en route to the quarter-finals.
