Inter Lagos, Ikorodu City suffer Gold Cup setbacks

Lagos Derby rivals Inter Lagos and Ikorodu City suffered setbacks on MatchDay 4 of the ongoing Ogunjobi Gold Cup pre-season tournament at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, on Monday.

Inter Lagos were beaten by Grassrunners FC, who needed just 28 minutes to settle the contest. Ajibola Emmanuel opened the scoring after capitalising on a defensive error before Ubi Johnson doubled the advantage with a well-placed finish.

The victory lifted Grassrunners FC to the top of the standings with 10 points.

Ikorodu City also endured disappointment, losing 2-0 to Abakaliki FC despite enjoying 53 per cent possession.

Moses Amanekwu broke the deadlock four minutes after the half-hour mark to hand Abakaliki FC the lead. The De Rice Boys sealed victory in the 88th minute when a poor clearance from Ikorodu City fell to Chimaobi Metumareobi, who fired a half-volley from inside the box.

The win moved Abakaliki FC into second place with nine points.

Doma United recorded their first victory of the competition after defeating newly promoted NNL side Dokkal Khairu FC of Ile-Ife 3-1.

Haruna Abubakar opened the scoring in the seventh minute before Bitrius Philemon doubled the lead in the 38th minute. Usman Nasiba completed Doma United’s scoring in the 85th minute, while Dokkal Khairu managed a consolation goal.

Earlier, Stormers SC and Sunshine Stars played out a 1-1 draw in the opening MatchDay 4 fixture, with both goals coming in the first half.

Action in the Ogunjobi Gold Cup resumes on Wednesday following Tuesday’s scheduled rest day.
