Katsina United clarifies Chinedu Ozor's death
Katsina United on Wednesday moved to clarify reports surrounding the death of their player, Chinedu Ozor, following widespread claims on social media that the footballer regained consciousness after collapsing during a friendly match against Niger Tornadoes.
The Nigeria Premier Football League club said unequivocally that Ozor did not regain consciousness and did not survive the medical emergency, describing reports suggesting otherwise as false.
Ozor collapsed during the friendly encounter at the Muhammad Dikko Stadium in Katsina. Despite efforts to save his life, the player was pronounced dead.
In a statement titled “A Heartfelt Clarification,” Katsina United said it was compelled to address what it described as inaccurate reports that had emerged in the aftermath of the tragedy.
“We have seen reports claiming that Chinedu later regained consciousness or ‘came back to life.’ We understand that people desperately wanted this to be true. We all did. But sadly, those reports are not true,” the club said.
No recovery after collapse
The clarification comes amid social media reports and insinuations that Ozor may have shown signs of life after initially being declared dead, with some accounts suggesting that he was subsequently taken from a mortuary back to a hospital for further treatment.
Katsina United rejected the suggestion that such developments amounted to a revival or recovery.
The club explained that, in the immediate aftermath of the incident, Ozor’s family, overwhelmed by shock and desperately hoping for a different outcome, requested further medical confirmation before his body was taken to the morgue.
“In the heartbreaking moments after the incident, Chinedu’s family, overwhelmed by shock and refusing to give up hope, asked for further medical confirmation before his body was taken to the morgue,” the statement said.
The Northern based club stressed that the family’s request for further confirmation should not be interpreted as evidence that Ozor had regained consciousness.
“That moment of hope must not be turned into a story that Chinedu survived. He did not regain consciousness. He passed away,” Katsina United stated.
Appeal to stop speculation
The NPFL outfit urged members of the public, media organisations and social media users to refrain from spreading unverified accounts of the incident, warning that such reports were causing further distress to a family already dealing with an unimaginable loss.
“We ask from the bottom of our hearts: stop the rumours. Stop the false reports. Stop sharing unverified information,” the club said.
Katsina United also appealed for sensitivity in reporting Ozor’s death, emphasising that behind every social media post and headline was a grieving family.
“Behind every post, every headline and every video is a grieving family. Behind the name Chinedu Ozor was a son, a brother, a teammate, a friend and a young man whose life meant so much to many people,” the statement added.
The club said Ozor’s teammates and friends were also struggling to process his death and called for them to be given space to mourn.
“At this moment, what his family needs is compassion, not speculation. What his teammates need is space to grieve. And what Chinedu deserves is to be remembered with dignity,” Katsina United said.
The club concluded its statement with a prayer for Ozor’s family and friends, asking God to give them the strength to endure the loss and for the late footballer’s soul to “rest in perfect peace.”
