Port Harcourt set to host historic 2026 NWFL Premiership Super Six Finals
For the first time in the history of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), Port Harcourt will host the prestigious Premiership Super Six Finals, as the Garden City prepares to welcome the country’s top women’s football clubs for the 2026 title showdown.
The NWFL officially confirmed Rivers State’s capital as host of the season-ending playoffs, with the championship scheduled to run from June 5 to June 14, 2026.
The Super Six, regarded as the climax of the NWFL Premiership season, will see six of Nigeria’s finest women’s teams battle in a round-robin format over nine days, with the eventual winners crowned league champions and handed Nigeria’s ticket to the WAFU-B qualifiers for the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Speaking on the decision to stage the competition in Port Harcourt, NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, praised the Rivers State Government for its continuous commitment to women’s football development.
“On behalf of the management of the NWFL, we are delighted to announce Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as host of the 2026 NWFL Premiership Super Six Finals,” Shabi said.
“The Rivers State Government has consistently demonstrated strong support for women’s football and successfully hosted our Annual General Assembly last October. We are excited to return with our flagship competition as part of our commitment to expanding elite women’s football across Nigeria.”
This year’s tournament features defending champions Bayelsa Queens alongside Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and first-time qualifiers Abia Angels.
Each team will play five matches in the highly competitive playoff series, with every point expected to count in what promises to be another fiercely contested race for the crown.
The NWFL has witnessed a changing of champions in recent years, underlining the growing competitiveness of the women’s top flight. Rivers Angels lifted the title in 2021, Bayelsa Queens emerged champions in 2022 and 2025, Delta Queens triumphed in 2023, while Edo Queens claimed the title in 2024.
Shabi also stressed the need for professionalism and strict adherence to competition regulations by all participating clubs.
“The Super Six remains the pinnacle of the NWFL Premiership season, and we are confident the fans in Rivers State will create another memorable atmosphere for players, officials, partners, and supporters,” she added.
“We also urge all qualified clubs to adhere strictly to all competition regulations, schedules, and directives that will be communicated subsequently by the League. Once again, congratulations to the participating teams, and we wish them a successful outing at the Super Six.”
Beyond deciding the league champions, the tournament carries continental significance, as the winners will advance to the WAFU-B qualifiers in pursuit of a place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League and ultimately the 2027 FIFA Women’s Club Championship.
