Lazio legend Bruno Giordano praises Dele-Bashiru, highlights tactical area of improvement

Lazio legend Bruno Giordano has praised Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru for his physical and attacking qualities while pointing out that the Nigerian still has room to develop tactically.

Giordano was discussing Lazio’s squad and the options available to head coach Gennaro Gattuso when he highlighted Dele-Bashiru as a midfielder capable of causing problems for opponents with his physical attributes and ability to compete in individual battles.

“Dele-Bashiru? He’s a player who gives the impression of being dangerous. He’s undisciplined in the game, but he has physical and attacking skills. It’s unlikely because he’s a man-on-man duel, even if he still has a lot to learn tactically,” Giordano said, as quoted by Lazio News.

Dele-Bashiru’s progress at Lazio this season was disrupted by a thigh injury sustained during the club’s 1-0 Serie A victory over Bologna on August 24.

The Nigerian midfielder started the game but was substituted after 54 minutes. Subsequent medical examinations revealed a first- or second-degree muscle tear, which was expected to sideline him for at least three weeks.

The injury also ruled Dele-Bashiru out of Nigeria’s September international commitments. He was not included in Éric Chelle’s squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau as he continued his recovery.

Lazio subsequently adopted a cautious approach to his rehabilitation. Gattuso confirmed in September that the club did not want to rush the midfielder back into action, including for the match against Venezia.

Dele-Bashiru eventually made significant progress in his recovery, returning to full team training towards the end of September after spending more than a month on the sidelines.

His return provides Gattuso with another midfield option as Lazio continue their campaign, while Giordano’s comments underline both the qualities that make the Nigerian an attacking threat and the tactical improvements he can still make.
