Owen Oseni suffers fresh injury setback in Super Eagles cap-tying bid
Owen Oseni has suffered another setback in his bid to make a cap-tying appearance for the Nigeria's senior men's national team in 2026 after picking up an injury during the international break.
The tri-national forward made his Nigeria debut at the 2026 Unity Cup, coming on as a substitute for Philip Otele in the 77th minute of the Super Eagles’ emphatic 3-0 victory over Zimbabwe.
Oseni was not included in Nigeria’s squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, nor for the upcoming international friendly against Russia, after only recently returning from an injury that ruled him out of Plymouth Argyle’s opening six competitive fixtures of the season.
The Irish-Ivorian-Nigerian attacker suffered a thigh injury towards the end of Plymouth’s pre-season preparations. He eventually returned to action against Doncaster Rovers before also featuring against Cardiff City U21s, Barnsley and Crystal Palace U21s.
However, Oseni has now been hit by another injury setback.
According to Plymouth Live, the 23-year-old is expected to spend around six weeks on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury during Plymouth’s 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace U21s in the EFL Trophy.
Oseni sustained the injury in the first half while competing for the ball with an opposing player.
The latest setback is a blow to his hopes of returning to the Nigeria squad and securing a further appearance that would strengthen his international future with the Super Eagles.
Oseni enjoyed an impressive maiden campaign with Plymouth, registering 15 goal involvements in 33 appearances. His performances earned him his first Nigeria call-up and ultimately led to his senior international debut.
Born in Waterford, Ireland, Oseni is eligible to represent Nigeria and Ivory Coast through his father and mother respectively, in addition to his Irish eligibility by birth.
