OFFICIAL: WAFCON-bound Nigeria star joins Halimatu Ayinde at Europa champions BK Hacken
Swedish Women’s Allsvenskan side BK Häcken have completed the signing of Nigeria international Joy Omewa, with the Super Falcons striker agreeing a contract that will keep her at the club until the end of the 2029 season, SavidNews report.
The 23-year-old joins the Gothenburg-based outfit from English Women’s Championship club Nottingham Forest, where she impressed during a brief spell after leaving Danish giants Fortuna Hjørring.
Speaking after completing the move, Omewa expressed her excitement at joining one of Sweden’s leading clubs.
“I want to contribute with joy—just like my name,” the Nigerian forward said.
Omewa arrives at BK Häcken following an impressive rise through European football. After leaving Nigeria at the age of 17, she featured for Confluence Queens before moving to Denmark, where she first played for B93 and later established herself as one of the country’s most prolific strikers with Fortuna Hjørring.
Her standout campaign came during the 2024/25 season when she scored 22 league goals in 24 matches to finish as the Danish league’s top scorer, while helping Fortuna Hjørring secure both the league title and the Danish Cup. She left Denmark with an impressive tally of 55 league goals, in addition to seven goals in European competitions, before making the switch to Nottingham Forest.
BK Häcken Sporting Director Martin Ericsson believes Omewa possesses the qualities to strengthen the club’s attack.
“Joy is a physically dominant player with tremendous power, but she is also an attacker who contributes to the team’s play and is a killer inside the penalty area. Her instinct for scoring goals is exceptional, and she is always searching for the next opportunity,” Ericsson said.
Omewa credited her years in Denmark for transforming her into a more complete striker.
“I developed my goalscoring ability, especially my positioning in and around the penalty area. I worked hard on becoming as efficient as possible inside the box,” she said.
The move comes on the back of another major milestone in her career after making her senior debut for Nigeria’s Super Falcons, scoring twice on her international debut.
“It means so much to me. Representing Nigeria has been my dream since I was a child, and scoring two goals on my debut made it even more special,” she added.
Omewa is currently with the Super Falcons squad preparing for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where she will be reunited with fellow BK Häcken midfielder and Nigeria international Halimatu Ayinde.
The Nigerian forward revealed that joining BK Häcken was an easy decision, citing the club’s reputation for developing players and competing at the highest level.
“I know BK Häcken is a fantastic club that helps players improve. I believe this is the right place for me to continue my development,” she said.
Ericsson also welcomed the latest addition to Häcken’s squad, describing Omewa as a player whose ambition and personality perfectly align with the club’s philosophy.
“Joy will bring energy both on and off the pitch with her winning mentality, determination and goalscoring ability. We look forward to welcoming her after the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations,” he said.
