Super Falcons defeat Black Queens in final WAFCON warm up

Nine-time African champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, wrapped up their preparations for the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in style, securing a confident 3-1 victory over regional rivals Ghana in a friendly match held in Morocco.

The high-tempo encounter saw Nigeria stamp their authority early, with forward Chiwendu Ihezuo breaking the deadlock in the 34th minute. Star striker Asisat Oshoala doubled the advantage just before the break, calmly slotting home a penalty in the 44th minute, her first goal for the national team since October 31, 2023.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade made it 3-0 with a precise finish in the 55th minute, underlining Nigeria’s dominance. Ghana’s Alice Kusi grabbed a late consolation goal for the Black Queens, but it wasn’t enough to dent the Falcons’ impressive showing.

The match marked the final preparatory fixture for the Super Falcons ahead of their WAFCON 2024 campaign.

Nigeria will kick off their tournament on Sunday, 6 July, when they face Tunisia in a Group B opener at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. They’ll go on to battle Botswana and Algeria in their remaining group-stage matches.

The Super Falcons, after convincingly winning, now shift their focus to Morocco 2024, as they aim for a historic 10th continental crown.
