Patrice Motsepe confirms CAF reviewing proposal to restore AFCON to biennial format

Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has revealed that the governing body is considering a proposal to return the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to its traditional two-year cycle.

Motsepe confirmed that the possibility of staging the continental competition every two years is currently under review, signalling a potential change to the tournament’s scheduling format.

“We are looking into bringing AFCON back to every two years. That’s under review,” Motsepe said.

The development comes amid reports that CAF’s Executive Committee is expected to consider a proposal to retain the biennial format at its meeting on Friday.

A member of the CAF Executive Committee reportedly indicated that the proposal would be adopted during the meeting, although an official decision was still awaited at the time of the report.

AFCON has traditionally been held every two years, providing African national teams with regular opportunities to compete for continental honours. However, discussions over the tournament’s scheduling have intensified amid concerns about the increasingly crowded international football calendar.

A return to the biennial format would have significant implications for participating nations, including Nigeria’s Super Eagles, as teams plan their preparations for future continental competitions.

CAF’s final decision is expected to clarify the future scheduling of Africa’s flagship international football tournament.
