Sand Eagles lose to Ghana on penalties in first leg of Beach Soccer AFCON Qualifiers
Nigeria’s Super Sand Eagles suffered a 5-4 penalty shootout defeat to Ghana after a thrilling 4-4 draw in the first leg of their 2026 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations (BSAFCON) qualifying tie in Kaduna on Saturday.
Isa Hamza Manga delivered an outstanding performance for Nigeria, scoring a hat-trick, including the opening goal, as the Sand Eagles battled the Black Sharks in an entertaining encounter. Ekene Obi also got on the scoresheet in extra time, but Nigeria could not secure victory as Ghana fought back to force a penalty shootout.
Mawuli Sosu scored twice for Ghana, while Wise Nyamadi netted an extra-time equaliser to ensure the Black Sharks remained in contention after regulation time and extra time.
Ghana eventually won the shootout 5-4, giving them an advantage ahead of the return leg scheduled to take place in Keta next Sunday.
The result leaves Nigeria needing a strong performance away from home to keep their qualification hopes alive. The Sand Eagles must win the second leg to improve their chances of advancing to the continental tournament.
The winner of the two-legged tie will secure a place at the 2026 BSAFCON, scheduled to be held in Senegal.
